April 8/09 Per. B 9 Math

We started today's class on word problems by going over the crossword problems from yesterday. Everyone did quite well, and their success in that activity showed clearly in our next problem. We asked Brett and Taryk to come to the from of the class and help us work through a problem.
If Brett has $4 more that Taryk and together they have $52, how much does each person have?
Some people were able to solve the problem relatively quickly, while others needed to talk it over a bit. In the end, we were able to convert the word into equations and then use several skills we already had to solve the problem. Once done that, we moved on to a more complicated problem, and before talking at all about how to solve it, we each took several minutes to see what we could come up with on our own. I was quite impressed with the ideas we had. We finished the class by completing the problem, which will be posted online tomorrow.

Homework for Thursday is to finish the matching sheet call "why did the cow keep jumping over the barrel?"
