Today we started our unit on solving word problems by looking at an example of math used in a practicle situation; rocket launches!
We spent some time looking what the control person means when they say, "t minus 17 seconds" and how math and words are related.
Following that we discussed the problem solving process and tried to use it in a game called mastermind. Most people were able to get one of more solutions through luck or trial and error, but our goal was to come up with a strategy that worked every time. Each level was more challenging than the last and we didn't quite get to the end, so that is what we'll talk about tomorrow.
